Here we have the official trailer of Blade: The Series, the almost forgotten TV show about Marvel’s incredibly popular vampire hunter. Released in 2006 by the American channel Spike TV, it was one of those projects that flew under the radar for many — but it has a direct connection to the trilogy starring Wesley Snipes.
You might not know this, but before the MCU’s Blade even made it off the drawing board — if it ever will (hopefully not, because it looks like it’s going to be another piece of crap) — it’s worth remembering that the vampire hunter already had his own TV series. It was actually created by David S. Goyer, the same screenwriter responsible for all three original Blade films. In addition to creating the show, Goyer also worked as a producer and co-wrote the pilot episode with Geoff Johns.
Instead of Snipes, the role of Blade went to rapper Sticky Fingaz (credited as Kirk “Sticky” Jones). The cast also includes Jill Wagner, Neil Jackson, Jessica Gower, Nelson Lee, and none other than Randy Quaid (Cousin Eddie from the Vacation series and Russell Casse in Independence Day). The story takes place after the events of Blade: Trinity (2004) and was produced by New Line Television in partnership with Marvel Entertainment, Phantom Four Films, and Warner Bros. Television. The show only had one season, with 13 episodes originally aired between June and September of 2006.
Despite a few solid action scenes, the reception was lukewarm, with criticism aimed at the script’s clichés and the absence of Snipes in the lead role. Still, the series has its own merits as a product of its time — before the current standard of TV shows that now have blockbuster-level budgets and polish (even though many of them are still totally lame).
Synopsis of the series
Blade is a warrior whose life mission is to wipe out the creatures of the night. A dhampir — half-human, half-vampire — whose mother was attacked by these monstrous abominations during pregnancy. He possesses all of their strengths and none of their weaknesses, along with a thirst for vengeance that forces him to live apart from the world.
Now, all his efforts are focused — on destroying half of himself, that consumes him, but that also gives him the strength to carry on. That’s why he’s decided to eliminate every last vampire, with the help of a group of allies whose reasons for revenge are just as strong.
