In this video originally published on August 20, 2025 in the Gaming Room channel, we take a nostalgic shadowy flight into the world of Frank Castle, specifically through his Capcom beat ’em up The Punisher, originally released in 1993 to the arcades (CPS-1), with its intro sequence, demo plays, bios, and quickplays featuring the Punisher and Nick Fury. I used footage from both the international and Japanese versions, as in the latter, some attacks envelop targets in a blue power similar to the effect caused by M. Bison’s Psycho Crusher in Street Fighter II.
This fighting game pits the two Marvel characters against Kingpin in a battle using various weapons in a mission across New York City. In addition to fighting the Kingpin himself at the end, they’ll face a cast of villains ranging from ordinary urban punks to cyborgs and mutants (or cyborg mutants). Punisher and Nick Fury are essentially identical in terms of gameplay, but both have a more diverse array of moves than most beat ’em ups of the time, making the experience even more interesting.
The Punisher, in its arcade version, is a very popular game, considered one of the greatest brawlers ever and one of the best comic book video game adaptations of all time, which also was the first partnership between Capcom and Marvel by the way. Its Mega Drive/Genesis port, released in 1994, was not unanimously received, being considered a market flop.
Anyway, if you enjoy classic arcade games, a good beat ’em up, Capcom titles, and our favorite antihero, this video is for you. Watch, relive the nostalgia, and don’t forget to like, share with friends who are retro gaming fans, and subscribe to the channel for more gameplay of old games—with a good dose of Doom, of course!
