For those who don’t know, this film tells the story of Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase), who promised his clan the most traditional and fun Christmas ever, complete with a tree that barely fits in his living room, 25,000 twinkling lights, his wife’s cousin with a heart bigger than his brain, an exploding turkey on the dinner table, and a SWAT team surrounding the place. It’s a typical American comedy of that era, with a good dose of slapstick humor, a sensational cast and probably one of the most popular Christmas movies in history. It’s also part of the National Lampoon’s franchise and the Vacation movies.
This video is not only deeply nostalgic—especially for those of us who grew up watching it every Christmas season, waiting for the day of Our Lord’s birth—but also emotional, because, although the film depicts exaggerated, even outlandish situations, they still resonate with our real lives. I’d say it reflects its times, when popular culture was trying to portray more familiar, less idealized characters and situations, mocking us, but still being us. We can see this tendency in other great works from that era, such as Married… with Children and early (up to its seventh season) The Simpsons.
