Published by our Gaming Room‘s channel in May 4th, 2019, this video presents a MIDI version of the original background music from Rocky, the classic boxing game developed and published by Sega for Master System in 1987 obviously based on the most iconic sports film saga of all time, more specifically its first four installments.

It’s been said that the game’s music was originally composed by Kazuo Sawa, though I wasn’t able to confirm this attribution fully confirmed by reliable sources. In anyway, the .MID files were sequenced by João “Johnnyz” Buaes and, while they may not be 100% faithful to the in-game tracks, they’re impressively accurate and bring a distinctive charm to the soundtrack. Anyway, we have here both a video, with the MIDI sequencers as a BGM for some gameplay footage, and the downloadable files, which can be downloaded here.

About the game

One of the standout sports titles on the Sega’s 8-bit platform, Rocky lets you wear the gloves of no one less than Rocky Balboa, the “Italian Stallion,” in his climb to boxing glory. Just like in the movies, each opponent represents a new challenge — you’ll face Apollo Creed, the reigning champion; Clubber Lang, the fierce contender; and finally Ivan Drago, the relentless Soviet powerhouse.

Before each fight, training sessions test your reflexes and timing through various minigames. Punch sandbags to build strength before Apollo, hit the punching ball to sharpen speed and precision for Lang, and practice with punching mitts to prepare for Drago. The better your performance, the stronger your combinations become in the ring.

During matches, a single power meter under your name shows your stamina and attack strength. Keep an eye on both your and your opponent’s bar — full means you can deal (and take) heavier hits, but once it’s low, you’re vulnerable. Between rounds, you regain part of your strength and receive quick coaching before heading back into the action.

Walkthrough

I also published a video that teaches you how to finish this game, including beating Drago in a humiliating way. You might need a Rapid Fire device, an emulator with a turbo feature or to set some combo in your keyboard software though:

Okay, it’s up to you now.

Listen, remember, and let us know your favorite Rocky track, MIDI or otherwise, in the comments!

Cheers!
